Rebecca Corum-Weaver from the organization Hope For Kids has sent our staff another student volunteer opportunity:

On Saturday, December 5^th, Hope For Kids will be holding its’ annual holiday party for children in foster care and their families. The event will begin at 10:30 AM and conclude at 3:00 PM. This year’s location is Faith United Methodist Church at 512 Hughes Street, Bellefonte. (Located behind Bellefonte High School Football Field)

Hope For Kids is a faith based, non profit provider of therapeutic foster care, adoption and early child care education. It is located in State College and provides services to several rural as well as urban cities and towns.

Hope For Kids Night Out With the Spikes

Rebecca Weaver from Hope For Kids has supplied us with another exciting opportunity. For details, look to the next line:

Hope For Kids will be participating in a Night Out With The Spikes on Friday, August 28^th @ 7:00 PM. The evening will include a silent auction, raffle, fireworks and more. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will go towards supporting children’s programs at Hope For Kids, Kidz Rainbow Center, Easter Seals and Smart Start Center County. Tickets are still on sale for the price of $7.00 and can be purchased from Hope For Kids. Sponsorships for foster families and children to attend the game are also needed. New Summer Volunteer Opportunity!

Volunteer @ Penn State would like to introduce a brand new summer volunteer opportunity located in the Penn State area. This volunteer request comes from Rebecca Corum-Weaver who represents an organization called Hope For Kids:

Hope For Kids is a non profit, therapeutic foster care and adoption agency, located in State College, Pennsylvania. (www.HopeForKidsInc.org) In addition to these services, the agency provides early care and education to children ages six weeks through Pre-Kindergarten at Kidz Rainbow Center. (www.KidzRainbowCenter.org)

On Friday, June 5^th, Hope For Kids will be teaming up with Autism Opportunities Network, Inc. for a community fundraiser. (A golf tournament) This event will be held at Toftrees Golf Resort and Conference Center and the proceeds will go towards the creation of a sensory integration room to support children with autism. Volunteers are needed to assist with the collection of silent auction items and other community donations, distribution of invitations, recruitment of business sponsors and registration of golfers. Volunteers Needed For Eberly College of Science Summer Camp (Science- U)

As PSU Volunteer ramps up to bring the best volunteer opportunities for you in the new year, we want to feature a fantastic volunteer opportunity for this coming summer. Volunteers are needed to work in a camp environment for a camp run by the Eberly College of Science. The Penn State Eberly College of Science hosts a not-for-profit summer camp program for youth from 2nd to 12th grade called Science- U. The curriculum of the program is focused in 8 different areas, all of which have been designed by Penn State faculty. In addition, graduate, undergraduate and local educators have been enlisted to make the camps a captivating and educational experience.

Marcia Pettay, the Associate Director of Science- U is the contact for this volunteer opportunity and you can reach her by sending an email to mgp10@psu.edu. The camps run from Sunday to Friday between June 21- July 31, 2009. Information about the eight camps can be found on the Science- U Summer Camp webpage.

Get Involved In THON

The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON) is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, with all proceeds benefiting The Four Diamonds Fund, Conquering Childhood Cancer, at the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. After a year-round fundraising effort by the students of all Penn State campuses, THON culminates in a 46 hour no-sitting, no-sleep Dance Marathon in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Most Penn State Students have heard of THON. A lot of people get involved, but there are others who don’t know how to join the ranks of the thousands of students that participate every year. September is already proving itself to be an exciting time for Volunteer @ Penn State. You may have noticed that the layout and design of the site has changed. We’re currently working on deciding on a template that gets the job done by relaying information the most efficiently. Additionally, we are making some great contacts around the Penn State Community which will bring a ton more quality volunteer events to our readers. If you are interested in partnering with Volunteer @ Penn State to get volunteer events spread to a huge community, click on the Contact link in the menu bar above. In terms of current events, we are current with events up till December. We have a high number of opportunities that are listed on the Volunteer site for Penn State, but we are working on filling the calendar with events of our own.

The Inagural Post of Volunteer @ Penn State

Welcome to Volunteer @ Penn State- the first ever list of volunteer events at and around Penn State. The aim of this site is collect and distribute information for volunteer opportunities in the Penn State community. I have noticed the lack of organized volunteer information so I wanted to do something about it.

I am a sophomore at Penn State from the D.C. Metro Area. I know Penn State does great things like THON, but there are things we can do around the community to give back. My inspiration for this site was from my own need to find a random volunteer project that I could work on during small chunks of free time during the year. My volunteer experience is basically made of experiences from the Scouts. My favorite volunteer experience was my Eagle Project with the Scouts. I organized a group of 30 people to collect 1,609 pairs of eyeglasses in a little over a month.
